Dear Friends:
Fall has arrived here in Tuebingen.  Our short, rainy summer was a busy time.  Rain held off on July 3rd as we celebrated our annual “Fourth of July” Barbecue, with 25 in attendance.  My Theological English class also enjoyed an evening outdoors in between showers.  In August, I met a few times with two visiting American doctoral students to read a little theological German.  Most of the summer was given to catching up on administrative work, dealing with our refurnishing needs, and some travel.  We are now preparing for the semester activities to begin.  Cherie arrived back in Germany on Sept. 13, and immediately started work on some of the projects we have underway (some repainting at the Institute, yard work, acquisition of furniture, etc.).

Fall Program   In a couple weeks the University semester will begin, and with it our formal program.  Our first English Vesper Service will take place on October 23.  Special thanks goes to the Christian Church of Tyrone, Georgia, for the donation of communion ware for use with the English Vesper Service.  Our first Graduate Colloquium will take place on October 24th.  I will again be teaching Theological German four hours a week, and Theological English for two hours.

Other developments   Along with the Colloquium, Theological German is now listed as an official course in the catalog.  The Institute has also been given two pages in the back of the catalog to detail the rest of our program.  It is my goal to include the Theological English course in the regular class listings.  I am pleased to announce that the Protestant Faculty granted my request to teach a course on 2nd Peter and Jude during summer semester 2006.

New chorus books  A special “Thank You” to Shockley Flick and the choir at East 91st Street Christian Church, Indianapolis, for the gift of new “Maranatha” chorus books.  We will enjoy these immensely!  Thanks to EES board member Linda Smith for helping arrange this.
Memorial for Otto Betz:  Pending approval of the EES board, we have received permission from Frau Betz to name part of our collection in honor of Dr. Betz.  Of course the library will retain the name “Stuckenbruck Library,” and the Judaica collection will become the “Betz” collection.  Donations in honor of Dr. Betz will be used to increase our holdings in the area of “Second Temple Judaism.”  Thanks to Frau Betz for the photograph of Prof. Betz, and for some book donations.  Thanks to OttieMearl Stuckenbruck for the family photograph from 1968, the year Stuckenbrucks left Tübingen.  When the walls are repainted, this photograph will occupy a special place in the building.
Refurnishing   Thanks to all who have contributed toward replacing the furniture we lost when the congregation moved out of our building.  Shopping for “used” has provided us with some good-quality furniture at prices lower than we anticipated.  We have been able to purchase 45 used wooden “seminar” chairs for our worship room, which are similar to those at the University and in churches around.  We found a used oak dining table for the communion table.  We purchased 26 matching used dining chairs, for use in our fellowship room.  We also now have a couple other used pieces--a small “Kommode” (side board) for the entry hallway, and a hutch, a pantry, and a Schrank (wall unit), for the fellowship area.  Meanwhile, work is now underway to replace the badly worn carpet in the worship room.  We have made arrangements for a digital piano, to be delivered after the carpet is installed.  We are still looking for a serviceable Stehpult (podium or pulpit).

In other words, we are on schedule to have the worship and fellowship rooms ready for the start of services.  However:  contributions have not covered all of these costs.  In addition, we are still faced with furnishing the kitchen, including sink unit, cabinets and refrigerator.  Those costs do not include costs of plumbing, wiring, and sealing off the coal chute we found in the west wall when the old cabinets were removed.  If you would still like to contribute there is still time, and plenty of opportunity!  (see address below).

Family NewsAlisha survived the summer of hospital chaplaincy practicum, new baby, and extra work at the library.  School has started again, and she is working more hours in the library.  She and Marty are juggling their schedules, which is a challenge with the baby.  But they claim it is working o.k.  Pyper (5 mos) is eating some grown-up food, but needs to work on getting it all in her mouth (e-mail pictures available from me on request).
Justin is winding up a busy summer and fall.  In September we heard him perform with Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt.  Justin left October 1 for a ten-day concert tour to Japan.  Earlier in the summer I heard him play in Salzburg, and then in August caught up with his orchestra tour in Lucerne, Switzerland.  Logistics were a problem because of the flooding there at the time.  Though concerts were canceled by the city, I got to hear his group in a “special rehearsal.”  Justin’s assistantship with his professor was approved for this school year.  He is preparing for an international competition in Geneva, Switzerland, in November, and has received a fellowship at the arts center in Banff (Canada) for March, 2006.
Financial Update  We are starting our fourth year in Tübingen.  Our sincere and on-going thanks to those of you who have supported us with your prayers, and to those who have supported us financially.  We ask for continued support, especially as we try to refurnish the kitchen, for use with our expanding program.  Opportunities here are growing.  We need your prayers now more than ever!  For specific financial information, contact the EES office in Atlanta (see below).
love,
Scott and Cherie Caulley
