The city of Tübingen, over 900 years old, is located in the southwest part of Germany, in the Neckar River valley at the edge of the Swabian Alps. It is about 30 km south of Stuttgart. It is within easy driving distance of the Black Forest, and close to southeastern France and north central Switzerland (Basel, Bern). It is within a day's drive of many tourist destinations including Bavaria (Munich, King Ludwig's castles), Augsburg and the "Romantic Road," Lake Constance and Zurich, Switzerland, as well as Salzburg, Austria.

The University of Tübingen is over 500 years old. The University was chartered in 1477 with a grant from Graf Eberhard, a local nobleman. Today the city of Tübingen is home to some 100,000 people. The University enrolls around 25,000 students. Besides its famous theology schools (unlike other German universities, Tübingen boasts both a Protestant and a Catholic Faculty of Theology), the University is well-known for its medical school and for research in the sciences. Tübingen is also home to a branch of the Max Planck Institute, world leader in medical and scientific research.
